The gastric sleeve does NOT affect the absorption of food, but it is a restrictive procedure.
It’s a relatively safe surgery in which 80% of your stomach is removed, on average it removes two-thirds of it, depending on the size of each patient’s stomach
The portion of the stomach where the hormone called ghrelin is mainly produced gets removed. This hormone is responsible for sending the message to your brain that tells “I’m hungry” which helps you decrease the appetite and makes it more comfortable to carry a diet and lose weight.
Bypass surgery consists of reducing the size of your stomach (remaining approximately your stomach the size of a golf ball) creating a bridge between the stomach and the small intestine, shortening the length of the intestine that is in contact with food which reduces the amount of food absorbed.
This surgery is considered a mixed procedure because has two effects: restrict or limit the amount of food and also reducing its absorption (malabsorption).
